Maintenance Wizard
This Wizard simply gives you one easy way of setting up four automatic maintenance options. You can choose just to let Windows 98 do what it wants and take care of your disks or you can customise it. If you customise it, you first get the choice of removing items from your Startup group. These are the programs that appear in the Windows Startup group in the Start menu. Removing these programs from being started every time you boot will speed up the boot process. See also Accelerated boot time

You then get the choice of running Disk Defragmenter at a given time to reduce fragmentation and speed up application launch.

The next part sets up the running of ScanDisk to check for any errors on the drive.

Finally you can also choose CleanUp (see right) which will remove some unnecessary files from the hard drive.

When you have made your selections, and in each case you can change the settings for each program by clicking on the buttons on each screen, you see a summary of the maintenance tasks, and when they are scheduled to be next executed automatically. There is also a tick box to allow you to make Windows 98 perform all the listed tasks when you click on Finish. See also Scheduled Tasks
